2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible

Ford will build the 2013 Shelby GT500 at its AutoAlliance International factory in Flat Rock, Mich.

The lineup includes Ford GT, Mustang Cobra R, SVT F-150 Lightning, F-150 SVT Raptor and Shelby GT500KR. The 5.8-liter supercharged V8 with 650 horsepower, Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers and new Brembo brake system are key enablers for the improved performance.

The GT500 convertible has the same powertrain and underpinnings as the hardtop: a new supercharged 5.8-liter V-8, up from 5.4 liters in the old car, that produces 650 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque, sending its power to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed manual transmission and carbon-fiber driveshaft. And before you ask: No, the GT500 coupe’s 200 mph top speed doesn’t carry over to the Convertible. In a rare moment of sanity, Ford’s engineers saw fit to limit the GT500 ‘vert to 155 mph – like the rest of the roofless Mustangs.

There were also SVT versions of more modest vehicles like the Focus economy car and Contour midsize sedan. Ford Motor Co. said it will unveil the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 convertible today at a press preview for the Chicago Auto Show. Ford and SVT followed up with other performance cars including the SVT F-150 Lightning, SVT Contour, SVT Focus, Ford GT supercar, F-150 SVT Raptor, and the recent spate of Mustang Shelby GT500 models.The 650-horsepower muscle-car’s debut marks the 20th anniversary of the car maker’s Special Vehicle Team, or SVT.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 also helps celebrate the two-decade run of Ford’s SVT division, commemorated by special illuminated doorsills in the car. The V-8 benefits from go-fast tweaks like high-lift camshafts, while the drivetrain scores a stronger clutch and transmission gears. The current 2012 GT500 by comparison offers 550 hp and 510 lb-ft. The SVT program began with the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra, which offered a then-impressive 235 hp from its 5.0-liter engine.
